Announcements (previous ones)

  • New Assignment 5 (updated on 25 November) is posted.
    • Two more questions on the topic covered this week (Drying) will be posted on Tuesday.

  • Updated: The midterms were returned in class on last Friday. Grades are now posted to Avenue. I've had a chance to analyze the data:
    • The average grade for the midterm was 71.2 (median was 72) with a stdev of 13.9, which is a little higher than I prefer. The distribution is mostly normal, with a slightly heavy left tail. There is nothing in the grades to warrant adjustment (i.e. "curving").
    • Assignment 5 has sufficient bonus grades to boost your grade; in addition to the take-home exam that's been dropped and course grades redistributed.
    • As mentioned in class, I apologize for the delay in grading. Overhauling this course while teaching it for the first time, and teaching 4N4 for the first time has just used up all my spare hours.
    • For issues regarding the midterm grading, please see Kevin regarding questions 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, and see Daryl for the others.

  • Some of you might be confused by the modified grading for the course. Here's a spreadsheet to plug in your grades and see what happens.

  • The final week of classes is here, week 13. We will consider supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) and drying. Then on Friday, the last class, we will have some examples covered and the course wrap-up lecture. It is also the last week to pick-up any old assignments and midterms: I will bring them to class everyday on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; after that I will destroy uncollected material.

  • If you prefer not to appear in any of the presentation course videos, please send me an email by Saturday and I will edit you out and replace the video. Videos are hosted on a 3rd party server, so I cannot restrict access to McMaster only.

  • Could I please ask you all to seriously consider filling in a course evaluation at https://evals.mcmaster.ca - they are really helpful for me to update the shape the course for the 2013 class.
